Words by Zachary Franck Tonight is the night! The Cap is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic 1978 album Cats Under the Star. Not only will Melvin Seals & JGB be playing songs from the iconic album, they'll also be playing choice cuts from All Good Things. Melvin Seals & JGB are paying their respects to Jerry Garcia in a way that every Deadhead can respect and admire, and what better place to do it than at The Capitol Theatre!? During an interview in the late 1980s, he said, "The record I worked hardest at and liked best was Cats Under the Stars. That was kind of like my baby. It did worse than any other record I ever did. I think I probably gave away more copies than I sold. It was amazingly, pathetically bad. But I’ve learned not to invest a lot of importance in 'em, although it's nice to care about your work." It was released in 1978 and is the only album that is credited to the Jerry Garcia Band. Although the record wasn’t a financial success, it is looked back on as a fan-favorite. And as he neared the end of his life, his feelings about the album remained the same. In the early 90s, he said, “As far as I'm concerned Cats Under the Stars is my most successful record — even though it's my least successful record! I've always loved it and it just never went anywhere." His faith and conviction are two of the things that people loved most about him. So, it’s only right the musicians that he touched continue to carry the torch that he lit. Since Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995, Melvin Seals has continued to bring his music to the masses. There's a reason that Jerry nicknamed him "Master of the Universe" so many years ago. He, along with the musicians in JGB, are going to deliver a tremendous rendition of Cats Under the Stars. Plus, John Kadlecik will be starting the night off with a special acoustic/electric set! What’s not to love? Get your tickets now and come celebrate the 40th anniversary of Jerry’s favorite album.
