The average EDM show has a lot of givens. The clear expectations like heavy bass, drum machines and crowd moving drops are usually present, however Saturday night’s show at The Cap with Gibbz, Illenium and headliner Big Gigantic all exceeded the requirements of the average EDM performance. The lineup of acts had a clear theme of electronic music extended or deconstructed. Rather than just relying on the sound created by the array of mixers and machines on the table in front of each act, they all brought something to the stage that expressed a higher level of individual talent.

The show began with opener Gibbz, the one man act of loop machines, live guitar and incredible, pitch belting vocals. For a crowd that needed some hyping up for the headliner, Gibbz went above and beyond. His solo performance created a sound that filled the stage and got the growing crowd moving as they entered the theater. Gibbz is definitely one of those up and coming acts that you ought to keep your eye on.

Continuing with the theme of room filling sound and expanded EDM, the show proceeded with Illenium taking the stage. Residing from Denver, Colorado, the solo DJ, Illenium, not only brought with him an exceptional performance of live mixing ability, but extended beyond the role of the normal DJ by incorporating some percussion into his performance. Wielding drum sticks, Illenium used an electronic drum pad that produced drum beats that reverberated throughout the theater. An overall great performance by the Colorado producer.

The show concluded with the highly talented duo Big Gigantic. The hip-hop and jazz musical group based out of Boulder, Colorado consists of saxophone and production by Dominic Lalli and drums by Jeremy Salken. Providing original mixes like “The Little Things” and “All of Me” as well as remixing some notable songs like “ I Need A Dollar” by Aloe Blacc, Big Gigantic gave a highly unique and memorable performance that elevated them above many of the more typical electronic music acts in the industry today—and this was very clear from the overwhelming atmosphere of the crowd. Another great night at The Cap.
