Starting on November 24, 1990, Thanksgiving traditions at The Capitol Theatre have run deep, featuring some of music's most innovative ensembles, and historic legends in the jam scene. From Phish's Annual Thanksgiving Jam, to our upcoming Thanksgiving weekend shows with Guster, we're looking back on some of our favorite moments, and looking ahead to what's to come.

1. Phish with Savoy Truffle on November 24, 1990

25 years ago, Phish and Savoy Truffle historically played the very first Thanksgiving Jam at The Cap. This was Phish's second show at The Cap and the flyers read “100% Pure Phish." Highlights include Trey dedicating "The Squirming Coil" to "friends at Conjunction Junction, who are the only other people we know who can play this song.” He also dedicated the song to his parents who were in attendance. The feeling of gratitude was in the air at this iconic show! Check out the setlist.

2. God Street Wine on November 25, 1994

God Street Wine played a huge role in evolving the jam-rock scene in the early 90s, and this thrill-ride of a show displayed why. Taking place the day after Thanksgiving, the crowd was all smiles as they danced off their dinner during exploratory jams like "Peanut Butter Jar," "Warm in Here," and "Driving West." The show ended with a double encore of "Girl From Ipanema" and "Nightingale." Friends and family were present for this joyous occasion. Listen to the show:

3. Phish with Shockra on November 30, 1991

This was Phish’s fourth show at The Cap and was a sold out, all-ages show. Shockra's bassist Edwin Hurwitz was giving slap bass lessons to Mike Gordon, and resulted in the two bands spending a significant amount of time together. The word had spread, and according to fans, the dedicated without tickets were trying to rush the doors to secure a spot. As history states, the balcony shook as fans danced their hearts out. 4. The Complete Last Waltz on November 27, 2013

On the day before Turkey Day, The Complete Last Waltz came to The Capitol Theatre to pay tribute to The Band's 1976 performance of The Last Waltz. The line-up of first-class artists included, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Sam Cohen, Jeff Chimenti, and many more! It was a fiery performance filled with intensity and passion! 5. Phish on November 27 - 28, 1992

This was The Cap's Third Annual Thanksgiving Jam and a two-night run for Phish! Highlights from the first night include the band sans-microphones on "Memories" in order to show off the acoustics of the theater. During the first night, Trey referred to Jimi Hendrix as "the greatest electric guitarist ever" and dedicated "Faht" to his honor. The song "Faht," is a rare gem, and has only been played 12 times in total. It appeared for the second time ever on this night. Fun fact: The show opened with "My Sweet One" which was soon interrupted by a bass problem. The band referred to the issue as “Capitol Punishment.” This was Phish’s seventh and last show at The Cap. 6. Strangefolk with special guest Al Schnier on November 23 - 24, 2012

During this two-night run, Strangefolk, joined by Al Schnier of moe., came together for a night of creative and collaborative jamming. With a long history performing together, the night was filled with nostalgia and memorable music. The setlist included Grateful Dead classics "Jack Straw" and "Deal." Al was feeling the good vibes when on the second night he professed his love for his "man-friends" in Strangefolk. These moments of friendship are why Thanksgiving jams at The Cap are so special! 7. The Complete Last Waltz on November 26, 2014

This was The Cap's second year hosting The Complete Last Waltz and the show lasted a lengthy 4-hours. Beginning in the balcony, stage left, a five-piece ensemble played the “Theme from The Last Waltz.” Following the stunning balcony performance, Joe Russo did his best Levon Helm on “Up on Cripple Creek,” as the brass and horns re-emerged. There was a revolving door of guests, but the core band consisted of Russo, Sam Cohen, Scott Metzger, Dave Dreiwitz, Marco Benevento, Ryan Miller, and Jeff Chimenti. 8. Blues Traveler and Strangefolk on November 29 - 30, 2013

Billed as the Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Jam, both Strangefolk and Blues Traveler played two-hour sets at The Cap each night. It was these two historic shows that brought the bands together for the first time on our stage. After the show, John Popper joined Strangefolk at Garcia's. Peter Shapiro said of the shows, “It will be a lot of fun to bring these bands together for the first time, and The Capitol Theatre is the best place to do that.” Listen to the show from November 30:

9. Robert Randolph on November 23, 2013

Robert Randolph & The Family Band were joined by some major music veterans for this exuberant night of music! The late great Bobby Keys, iconic saxman for The Rolling Stones, was joined by 7 Walkers singer and guitarist Papa Mali. After performing on The Capitol Theatre stage, Robert Randolph, Eric Krasno, and the sensational Jen "Pipes" Durkin came into Garcia's to drop the funk! Although not an official "Thanksgiving Jam," this show deserves some major credit.
